The unique feature of Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas is undoubtedly the incorporation of breathtaking art pieces into each and every one of the 327 rooms and suites, as well as the 13 beach villas. The aim of the property, to both draw inspiration from, as well as showcase the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings of Saadiyat Island and its breathtaking beach, including the rich local wildlife, culture and traditions; is unerringly followed through its partnering with a select and Emirati artist.
We partnered with Ashwaq Abdulla, a supremely talented Emirati artist whose ability to bring nature and its magnificent elements to life on a canvas, rendered her to be the unanimous choice for the task at hand. An in-depth understanding of the wildlife varieties behaviour, lifestyle and environment was cultivated through studying the local mangroves and beaches as well the creature these habitats provide shelter to.
Each artwork is a product of extensive research carried out with regards to the specimens of flora and fauna found within the reaches of the island itself and the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The artworks themselves differ from room to room and were envisioned to follow a series of themes. These have been clearly outlined below:
Sea and coast: The pieces that fall under this theme showcase the rich abundance of marine life that coexists with the population of Abu Dhabi, thriving in the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf. From the variety of hawksbill turtles and jellyfish, the masterpieces accurately depict every feature of the subject in question; however this is done in a watercolour fashion, with hazy lines, giving the subjects a sense of motion, as if caught in the middle of drifting through the waters. Pastel hues are heroed in these works, enhancing the relaxed sense evoked by the art. Additionally birds are featured, either interacting with one another or skulking the waters in search of food, with the flamingo being a clear favourite of the artist. The soft pinks and elegant shape of one of the region’s favourite birds ensure that the stand out piece that is sure to draw a guest’s attention to the piece upon entering a room.
Wildlife: The wildlife themed artwork focuses on the many species of gazelle and deer that call the vast expanses of the desert their home. Works falling under this categorisation adopt a more neutral palette as opposed to the sea and coast theme. Warm beiges and terracottas are favoured, complimented by deeper browns, with sharp black being used to depict the distinctive markings of each creature.
Desert and islands: This theme pays homage to the lifestyle and culture of the region with art works showcasing key elements of the UAE's heritage, such as the Arabian Oryx and dhow boats. The Arabian Oryx, a great source of national pride for the local community, is making a regal statement against the golden sand-tunes, brought to life through mixture of a beige colour palette and gentle brush strokes. It’s bold white colour is a symbol of strength, pride, and dignity. To truly celebrate the local history, the Emirati artist has captured another iconic symbol of the UAE, the dhow boat, sailing on the sea. The dhow represents the early trade and water industry, as before oil was discovered, the UAE’s main business was fishing and pearl diving from these very vessels. Offering serenity through the spectacular sunset painting, the dhow sails through the last golden rays, as the boundless masses of scarlet and purple blend the sky and the sea into one.
